Hubballi: The Vidyagiri police opened fire on a notorious criminal from Andhra Pradesh’s infamous Stuartpura gang on Saturday morning after he attempted to escape during a spot inspection.
The accused, identified as Pala Venkateshwar alias Kalyan Kumar, sustained bullet injuries in both knees. According to the police, Venkateshwar and his gang attempted to rob the house of Vikas Kumar, an employee of SDM Hospital, in Navalur. However, their plan was thwarted when the police, on night duty, arrived promptly after being alerted about the robbery.
The Vidyagiri police apprehended Pala Venkateshwar, who later revealed during interrogation that the gang consisted of 4–5 members and promised to lead the police to their planned rendezvous location. He was taken to an industrial area for further investigation. However, during the spot inspection, Venkateshwar attempted to assault the officers and tried to flee. Acting swiftly, PSI Pramod opened fire, injuring Venkateshwar, who collapsed at the scene. He is currently undergoing treatment at KMCRI Hospital.
Further investigation revealed that the same gang was responsible for a robbery within Vidyagiri police station limits on June 6. Disturbing CCTV footage from that incident showed the gang breaking into a house, brutally assaulting the occupants, and fleeing with valuables.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar described the gang as highly notorious, with over 80 cases registered against them. They have been involved in multiple robberies across Raichur, Yadgir, Dharwad, Chikkaballapur, and other districts in Karnataka. The Venkateshwara hailing from Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh, this team also active in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.
